Do you like Fallout 76? I do. It’s great. It had loads of bugs when it came out and a lot of people said, “No. I do not like this game. You should not play it.” But another lot of people ignored them and just carried on playing the game.

Trading. Do you do it? I do. It’s what’s kept me playing beyond the boredom moment. When you’ve done everything and the things you still do get very tedious. It’s easy to think a game has suddenly become “crap” when this happens. It might not have though. You just might have played it too much.

Who do I think I am to tell you how to trade?

Woah there! That’s not what this is about. Baby steps dear reader. This first guide is going to tell you how much I’ve paid for Junk items in FO76. It will also tell you what kind of prices I’ve seen “in the wild” as it were.

You do what you want with this information but I think it qualifies to be used as a starting point for some sort of price guide because well, I’ve bought and sold so many of these items. I’ve spent or earned an estimated 2.5 million caps since launch. So I TRADE. And I record those trades.

I’ve played since Beta and I have a number of accounts I use to maximise my trading income. For the last couple of months I started taking it seriously. Not in a life and death kind of way more “What would happen if…”

There is a limit on the amount of caps you can own at any one time on one character and that is 25,000. Some people think that isn’t enough especially given that the best items in-game are often sold for more than that.

Hi I’m Rudy, this here’s Tiny. I do all the fun stuff like killing and crafting. He does all the crap stuff. Like holding my junk. No not THAT junk. What were you thinking? Just because I wear make-up and a dress. Did you just assume…?!

You can have five characters on your account though so that raises the average player’s maximum amount to a total of 125,000 caps. It’s not practical to ever reach this limit though because well, you won’t be able to sell anything.

I have *mumble* accounts. Yes that’s right *mumble*. It’s no big secret. You can easily figure it out. I take about 60K caps in trading daily including vendors and spend around 25K in acquiring materials, gear and just generally staying alive.

So my “what if” was to ask, “Can one player make and keep a million caps. Could I become a Wasteland Millionaire?”

The answer is yes. Though it’s not as straightforward as first appears. And no, I’m not quite there yet. Though my worth in both caps and stock is VERY close. I’ll be posting about that little journey too.

While I work on that, let’s take a look at my data. Here is a list of Junk items and selected Aid and Misc items. Draft 1 (this one) is a response to a Reddit post I made simply asking if there was any interest in this data. /r/Market76 said yes. I wasn’t even really trolled. Specific game subreddits can be a tough crowd at times.

Caveats!

This data is collated from PC trades only. Console prices can and do vary slightly. In fact they tend to be a little lower these middle of the game items. That is, the stuff you can’t sell to a vendor bot but wouldn’t want to trash. Nor is it the kind of legendary and legacy items that command high prices or like-for-like trade.

For each item I offer a low, high and fair price, along with a trading range. I also show the retail price (that is, what the game SAYS its worth but we all know this is ALWAYS, ALWAYS wrong). For reference I have supplied items’ unperked weights and details on whether it bulks, if so how many items it takes to bulk, the number required to bulk, its retail price when bulked AND (the important bit) the calculated individual price once bulked. If I don’t rank number 1 on Google for “bulked junk” after that paragraph then I don’t know why.

The trading range encompasses prices I’ve seen actually traded in game, on Reddit and on Discord. That I have either bought or sold or I have reasonable proof that others have. The single number represents a median price. That is what I would say is commonly the most frequently traded price AT THE MOMENT. This first part of my price guide is almost certain to remain the most solid for the life of the game and also across platforms. These are hard-coded into the game and are the same on PC, PS4 and XB1 and to meddle with them would drastically alter the Fallout 76 economy. I’m not saying it couldn’t happen though but it’s unlikely.

Having said that, of course changes in drop rates and demand for certain items does trend up and down. Largely though these are quite stable with the exception of fluxes. A recent reported decrease in the drop rate of High Radiation Fluids has seen their price increase broadly by about 10-15% in game on Reddit but not (interestingly enough) on Discord. Update: since I began this guide I have seen stable flux prices slide back down to normal. Perhaps the drop rate nerf was a rumour or just a temporary “miscoding” by Bethesda. That’s my polite word for bug.

I discard outliers. That means if you say you’ve seen a Stimpack on offer in a player’s vending machine for 25,000 and that I should subsequently change this list then I would politely decline. Feel free of course to add a comment noting this, as it’s hilarious. At least the first time it happens

What next?

Feel free to comment here or on the Reddit post (address coming imminently). I will take your comments more seriously if you have read all of this guide though not just scanned the numbers and understand the limitations of something like this.

    1. You’re welcome John. I’m actually going to share my own spreadsheet if it’s if any interest. Part of the story of how I made a million caps.
